The government is eyeing Oman and Bahrain as alternative countries where overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) could be deployed after being repatriated from Kuwait.
Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque has identified the two Arab countries as “more humane” host nations for Filipino workers, following President Duterte’s decision to repatriate distressed nationals from Kuwait.
“PRRD (President Rodrigo Roa Duterte) has given priority to the right to life of our OFWs and will not allow further inhumane treatment to be inflicted on our OFW’s in Kuwait,” Roque said in a statement.
“Repatriated workers will receive financial assistance from OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) and may be deployed to more humane countries such as Oman and Bahrain,” he added.
President Duterte on Sunday said the government would stop sending workers to Kuwait following reports of brutal deaths endured by some Filipinos there. The latest case of abuse deplored by the President was discovery of a dead Filipino worker in a freezer.
